Ellsworth Bunker (1894-1985) succeeded Henry Cabot Lodge as U.S. Ambassador in Saigon from 1967 to 1973. He opposed the halt of the bombing of North Vietnam suggested by McNamara in 1967. During the Tet offensive, Bunker had to be hurried out of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, which was under attack by Vietcong commandos. In 1972 he assisted Kissinger in his efforts to convince President Thieu of the virtues of the agreement drafted in Paris.
